(Robert Walser,1878―1956)

A brief introduction to the Donner Siblings

Robert Walser, "The Berlin Trilogy" No.1: This is a book that does not use hostile sharpness, but only a triumphant smile to fight all the vulgarism in us.

Simon Donner, an unemployed young man with the temperament of a poet. We follow him on a colorful journey with the most active emotions. His life was not secure, but it was easy and pleasant. He ran night after night on the lonely country road. Now he became a bookseller, now a servant, now a scribe, then he became idle again, but he always found the most comfortable aspect of any situation. He was a man to be envied -- the sun shone in his heart; He was a man who turned his nose up at everything, an idle man in the true sense of the word - he knew how to use all his love to weave a happy nature like a plant.

About the author

"No one has the right to act like they know me in front of me."

Robert Walser (1878-1956)

Walser was born in Biel, Canton Bern, on April 15, 1878, the penultimate of eight children, attended school until the age of fourteen, after which he apprenticed in a bank, left home at seventeen, and while living in Basel he worked for the von Spbayer Company, and while in Stuttgart he found a job with the German Publishing Union. After a year in Stuttgart, he walked to Zurich by way of Tubingen, Hesingen, Schaffhausen, and so on, where he worked for a while in insurance, worked for a while in banking, lived in Waithill and on the Zurich Hill, and wrote poetry, which, it must be said, he did not write in his spare time, for which he always quit his job. Because he believed that art was something great." (From Walser's own biography)

In 1898, under the patronage of literary critic Joseph Victor Wiedemann, writer Franz Blay and others, Walser began to publish at the age of twenty.

In the summer of 1903, he was briefly employed as an assistant in the workshop of an engineer and inventor in Wiedensville, near Zurich, an experience that would later become the subject of his novel The Assistant.

In 1904, he published his first book, Fritz Cauch's Composition Book.

In early 1905, Walser went to Berlin, Germany, to attend a servant's training class, and in the autumn of that year he worked as a servant of a German nobleman for several months. This experience was later recounted in his diary novel Jacob von Gunten.

In 1906, Walser returned to Berlin, where he began writing novels while working as a clerk, and over the next three years published novels such as The Donner Brothers, The Assistant, and Jacob von Gunten, collectively known as the Berlin Trilogy.

In 1913, Walser walked back to his hometown of Biel. When World War I broke out, he was forced to enlist in the army and moved to Bern after the war.

In 1916, Walser first published a collection of his new and unpublished essays as Essays.

In 1917, a collection of essays entitled Strolls was published.

In early 1929, after a period of hallucinations and phobias, Walser was admitted to the Waldau State psychiatric Hospital in Bern on the advice of his psychiatrist, where he continued to write.

In 1933, after being misdiagnosed with schizophrenia, Walser was forcibly sent by his family to the Herissau mental Hospital in Biel, from which he never left. He has since stopped writing.

Walser loved walking alone all his life. On Christmas Day 1956, he died of a heart attack at the age of 78 while on a routine snow walk.

During his lifetime, Walser wrote seven novels and thousands of short stories and essays. In addition to his officially published works, he left behind a large number of miniature manuscripts, written in pencil and so small that they are almost unrecognizable. Between 1985 and 2000, some of these manuscripts were successfully identified by researchers and published in a six-volume anthology from the Pencil Field.

"There is always this conspiracy around me to drive away pests like me, to remove with grace and pride everything that does not fit into its world. I never dared to force my way into their world, I didn't even have the courage to look at it. So I live on the fringes of civic life, and what's wrong with that?"

Ye Hui, a fan of Robert Walzer.
