A brief introduction to Reporting Islam

Knowledge and power Reporting and masking power and complicity

The final work in Said's trilogy of Middle Eastern Studies

Replace hypocrisy with truth and evasion with responsibility

Replace safety with risk and bonhomie with criticism

From the Iranian hostage crisis to the Persian Gulf War to the World Trade Center bombing in New York, the Western world has been haunted by a ghost called Islam. Portrayed in the news media and concurred by government, academic and business experts, "Islam" has become synonymous with terrorism and religious fanaticism. At the same time, some countries also use the word "Islam" to justify their repressive regimes that have lost popular support.

In this landmark work, Edward Said examines the origins and influence of Islam's rigid image in the Western media. His combination of political commentary and cultural criticism reveals that even the most "objective" reporting of the Islamic world contains hidden assumptions and distortions of truth.

"Our world today is too complex, too diverse, and too likely to produce unprecedented situations (however repellent they may be to the United States) to be viewed solely in terms of resistance or enhancement of American power. Americans can no longer look at "Islam" only if it is pro-American or anti-American. This xenophobic, reductionist view of the world is guaranteed to keep America in conflict with intransigent groups; It would also spawn a continuation of the Huntington-style policies of the Cold War, intended to cover an unwieldy part of the globe. I suppose this policy can be seen as a positive promotion of the "Western way of life"; But I believe in an equally powerful argument: the Western way of life does not have to provoke hostility and conflict to clarify our sense of our place in the world." -- Said
