Breaking the Prism of Social Media
We suffer from social isolation in the real world, and the Internet, which we hope to break down, is increasingly becoming a place of division and violence. We see social media platforms' policies and content distribution algorithms as culprits and consider the possibility of going offline altogether, but Chris Bell, the author of this book, makes us pause and consider another possibility. Using cleverly designed online experiments and in-depth interviews, he demonstrates in this book that stepping out of the echo chamber will polarize us more, not less. Challenging common myths about echo chambers, foreign powers, and radical algorithms, the book reveals that social media functions more like a prism, distorting our identity, empowering status-seeking extremists, and making moderates virtually invisible; The solution to political tribalism lies deep within ourselves.
