厌倦、逃避现状（母亲离世、女儿夭折、负债累累）的图书管理员帕斯卡尔抛弃一切离家出走，远在异乡的他看到自己的讣告——家人误以为一个溺死的腐烂之人是他。他迫切地改头换面，以假身份“梅伊斯”享受自由，但“这种自由是谎言构成的重负之下的自由”：原本的生活会以各种方式留下细小的痕迹，他根本无法真正逃离。他再一次舍弃“梅伊斯”，想把“帕斯卡尔”找回来，可原本的自己也已渐行渐远。他成为了一个活着的死人、一个死了的活人。他就是还在世的已故的帕斯卡尔……
著者简介
路易吉•皮兰德娄（Luigi Pirandello，1867—1936），意大利小说家、戏剧家。他一生著述颇丰，有三百余篇短篇小说、七部长篇小说、七卷诗集、四十多个剧本以及两本文艺论著。1934年因“无畏而智巧地复兴了戏剧和舞台艺术”获得诺贝尔文学奖。其初期作品《被抛弃的女人》《没有爱情的爱情》等大多以西西里为背景，具有真实主义风格。从第二部长篇小说《已故的帕斯卡尔》（1904）开始主题发生重大变化，着力刻画不可知的外部世界与不确定的内心世界以及两者之间的冲突。这种变化大概与其身世相关：破产、妻子发疯、儿子沦为战俘、家境濒临崩溃，他甚至一度想了却生命……一个初冬，皮兰德娄受寒患肺炎，医治无效身亡。遵照其生前遗愿，他的葬礼极其朴素：赤身裸体仅裹一条床单，用一辆最简陋的马车载送，除了车夫、马匹，无任何送葬者，不发讣告、不要鲜花、不点蜡烛。

Bored and fleeing from his current situation (the death of his mother, his daughter, and his debt), librarian PASCAL leaves everything behind and finds his own obituary, which his family mistook for a drowned, rotting man. He urgently reinvented himself and enjoyed freedom under the false identity of "Meis", but "this freedom is freedom under the burden of lies" : the original life left small traces in various ways, and he could not really escape. He once again abandoned "Meis", want to "PASCAL" back, but the original himself has gradually drifted away. He became a living dead man, a dead living man. He is the late PASCAL who is still alive...

Luigi Pirandello (1867-1936) was an Italian novelist and dramatist. He wrote more than 300 short stories, seven novels, seven volumes of poetry, more than 40 plays and two literary works. He was awarded the Nobel Prize in Literature in 1934 for "the fearless and ingenious revival of theatre and stagecraft". His early works, Abandoned Woman and Love Without Love, are mostly set in Sicily and have a realist style. Since the second novel, The Late PASCAL (1904), the theme has changed significantly, focusing on the unknowable external world and the uncertain inner world and the conflict between them. This change is probably related to his life: bankruptcy, his wife went mad, his son became a prisoner of war, his family was on the verge of collapse, and he even once wanted to live... One early winter, Pirandello suffered from pneumonia and died. In accordance with his wishes, his funeral was extremely modest: naked but wrapped in a sheet, transported in the most rudimentary carriage, with no mourners except drivers and horses, no obituaries, no flowers, and no candles.

Liu Ruting, born in 1941, Hebei Province. Translated and reviewed, the Knight of the Italian Benevolent Star. He was the chief correspondent of the Rome bureau of Xinhua News Agency and the executive director of the Chinese Italian Literature Research Association. His translations include the theoretical works "Open Works", "The Threshold of the Shadow", the novels "The late PASCAL", "Where Christ is not", "It is too late", "The Tartar Desert", "In Love", the movie script "La Dolce Vita", "the Red Desert" and the poem "The Poem of Youth".
