在中国民间，那些牵着猴子、四海为家的耍猴人多半来自河南新野，新野耍猴人每年都像候鸟一样南北迁徙，每到6月麦收后和10月秋收后，大批耍猴人忙完了地里的农活，就开始外出耍猴，卖艺赚钱。

从2002年开始，《中国国家地理》记者马宏杰深入新野耍猴人群体，跟随他们扒火车、露宿街头，记录他们日常遭遇的酸甜苦辣和命运的流转变化。

耍猴人杨林贵，耍猴二十余年，到过黑龙江、西藏、海南，也到过越南、缅甸、俄罗斯，在景德镇，一个16岁的女孩看完猴戏，对他说：“老爷爷，你这一生给多少人带来了快乐啊！”杨林贵听后，那天一路上都很开心。

耍猴人乔梅亭，靠耍猴赚的钱帮助五个弟弟相继成家，自己终生未婚，却被弟弟们认为他有所偏袒，自己为了养老存下的18万元也全部被人骗走……

耍猴人鲍风山、鲍庆山、苏国印和田军安在黑龙江牡丹江市街头耍猴时，被当地森林公安局无理刑拘一个多月，一只他们赖以为生的猴子在被公安局没收后死亡，他们自己也面临着“非法运输野生动物罪”的指控……

此外，还有女耍猴人、当过国民党特务的耍猴人、给猴戏做道具的手工艺人……耍猴人的故事如同中国社会的一个切面，他们的时代是我们共同经历过的时代，马宏杰用持续二十年的记录为我们作证，就在不久之前，有人曾如此生活。

作者简介

马宏杰，《中国国家地理》图片编辑、摄影师，1963年生于河南省洛阳市，1983年开始摄影，做过工人、记者，2004年至今任职于中国国家地理杂志社。

近三十年来，作品持续记录社会底层人物的真实生存状况，展现扎根于中国乡土的人物故事、风景民俗。拍有《西部招妻》《江湖耍猴人》《唐三彩的故乡》《割漆人》《朱仙镇木板年画》《采石场》《家当》等二十多组专题图片。曾获“联合国教科文组织亚太地区比赛优秀奖”。《家当》参加意大利国际摄影节，并在英国SESAME画廊、瑞士Oriental Vis Art画廊及丹麦、挪威等地展出。

In Chinese folk, most of the monkeys who lead monkeys and live everywhere come from Xinye, Henan Province. Xinye monkeys migrate north and south every year like migratory birds. Every year after the wheat harvest in June and the autumn harvest in October, a large number of monkeys begin to go out to play monkeys and make money by busking.

Since 2002, Ma Hongjie, a reporter from China National Geographic, has been going deep into the Xinye monkey people, following them on trains and sleeping on the streets, documenting the ups and downs of their daily encounters and the changes in their fortunes.

Monkey man Yang Lingui, monkey more than 20 years, has been to Heilongjiang, Tibet, Hainan, but also to Vietnam, Myanmar, Russia, in Jingdezhen, a 16-year-old girl after watching the monkey, said to him: "Grandpa, you have brought happiness to how many people in this life!" After hearing this, Yang Lingui was very happy all the way that day.

The monkey man Qiao Meiting, relying on the money earned by the monkey to help five younger brothers have a family, he is unmarried for life, but his brothers think he is biased, and the 180,000 yuan he saved for retirement is all cheated away...

Bao Fengshan, Bao Qingshan, Su Guoyin and Tian Junan were playing monkeys on the streets of Mudanjiang City, Heilongjiang Province, when they were detained for more than a month by the local forest police bureau. A monkey they relied on for their livelihood died after being confiscated by the police, and they themselves faced charges of "illegal transportation of wild animals".

In addition, there are female monkey men, monkey men who have been Kuomintang agents, and craftsmen who make props for monkey shows... The story of the Monkey men is a slice of Chinese society, and their era is one that we have all lived through, as Ma Hongjie testifies with records lasting two decades, not so long ago.

About the author

Ma Hongjie, photo editor and photographer of China National Geographic, was born in Luoyang City, Henan Province in 1963. He began to take photos in 1983, worked as a worker and journalist, and has been working for China National Geographic Magazine since 2004.

In the past 30 years, the works have continued to record the real living conditions of people at the bottom of society, showing the character stories, scenery and folk customs rooted in the Chinese countryside. There are more than 20 groups of special pictures such as "Western Wife Recruitment", "Monkey Monkey Man", "Hometown of Tang Sancai", "Paint cutters", "Zhuxian Town Wood New Year Picture", "Quarry" and "Home". He was awarded the "UNESCO Asia Pacific Regional Competition Excellence Award". "Home" participated in the Italian International Photography Festival, and has been exhibited in SESAME Gallery in the United Kingdom, Oriental Vis Art Gallery in Switzerland, Denmark, Norway and other places.

The people in front of Malhongjie's camera "cannot be judged by normal moral standards." One photo after another shows a natural expression that is beyond imagination.
