The book, Breakthrough Negotiation: How to Say No to Getting More, completes what I consider to be a "trilogy" of Harvard negotiations-starting with Negotiating Power: The Art of Breakthrough Negotiation at Harvard, followed by Breakthrough Negotiation: How to Deal with Difficult People, and finally this book. Negotiating Power: Breakthrough Negotiations at Harvard University focuses on both sides reaching an agreement; Breakthrough Negotiation: How to Deal with Difficult People focuses on the other side, overcoming their opposition and the difficulties that prevent them from saying "no." "Breakthrough Negotiation (Advanced Part) : Learn to refuse to get more" focuses on you, is to learn to maintain and defend your interests, aimed at daring to refuse the other side's unreasonable demands, and actively say "no" to defend their own interests. Together, these three books form the Harvard Negotiation Project Series, which stands on its own and complements and augments the other two books.

Breakthrough Negotiation is not only a book about negotiation, but also a book about life skills, because all life is a dance of yes and no. Each of us is asked to say "no" every waking hour, whether to friends, family, bosses, employees, colleagues, or to ourselves. Whether and how we say "no" determines the quality of our lives. For us, "no" is probably the most important word we need to learn to say gracefully and effectively.

William Ury

Consultant to the International Negotiation Collaborative, co-founder of the Harvard Negotiation Project, has taught negotiation courses at Harvard Business School for entrepreneurs, union leaders, and government officials. His major books include Negotiating Power: The Art of Breakthrough Negotiation at Harvard University (co-author), Breakthrough Negotiation: How to Deal with Difficult People, and Breakthrough Negotiation: Learning to Refuse to Get More.
