In this short, emotional, topical documentary, author Levy not only tells about the darkest moments of her life when her marriage dissolves and her mother dies, but also reflects on what is meaningful, valuable, and fun life for women. Drawing on the ideas of Simone de Beauvoir, James Baldwin, Elena Ferrante, Margaret Duras, David Lynch, and Emily Dickinson, she attempts to outline the ultimate freedom of women's lives.

About the author

Deborah Levy (born 1959) is an English novelist, playwright, poet, and Fellow of the Royal Society of Literature. Novels have been shortlisted for the Booker Prize three times, with Swimming Home and Hot Milk on the shortlist. The short story was shortlisted for the International Frank O 'Connor Short Story Award and the BBC International Short Story Award, and was broadcast on BBC Radio 4. The Times described her as "one of the most exciting voices in contemporary British fiction". She has written several plays for the Royal Shakespeare Company.

Translator: Wang Rufei, Master of Arts in British and American Literature. He has translated the non-fiction works "Journey into Deep Time" and "Into the Wild" by British author Robert MacFarlan.

Wonderful book review

Levy is a generous writer. The brilliance of this short, emotional, controversial memoir is that it's not just about the painful milestones in her life - the end of her marriage, the death of her mother - it's also about what it is to be alive. I can't think of a writer other than Virginia Woolf who wrote better about the margins, the family, the non-event, and what it means to be a woman. This little book on a big topic talks about how to find a new way of life.
