　　乔安娜·伯克（Joanna Bourke）,伦敦大学历史学教授，英国科学院院士，英国皇家历史学会会员，澳大利亚国立大学博士，研究领域包括现代战争史、军事医疗史、情感史等。专著有《伤痕累累的世界：军事暴力和战争游戏如何侵袭我们的生活》《爱上动物》等十数本，其作品已被翻译成中文、俄文、西班牙文、加泰罗尼亚文、意大利文、葡萄牙文、捷克文、土耳其文和希腊文，曾获沃尔夫森历史奖（Wolfson History Prize）、弗兰克尔奖(The Fraenkel Prize)等多种重要奖项及头衔。

In the age of pain avoidance, let us see that pain has its own meaning.

From toothache, headache, dysmenorrhea, muscle pain, to mental distress, everyone is troubled by pain and tries to describe it with various figurical metaphors. From the "positive emotional experience" to the "evil" that needs to be overcome, how has the perception and narrative of pain changed? Some people use it to show their heroism, some people have no right to cry pain; Some people are thought to be naturally sensitive to pain, others seem to be particularly pain-tolerant... What accounts for these differences? How do people deal with themselves in pain?

This book tells the story of pain since the 18th century, across the fields of medicine, literature, religion, biology and other fields, examining how the narrative of pain has changed and how ideological factors such as faith, gender, race and class have influenced it, showing the dynamic links between the body, consciousness, culture and language, and providing new ways for us to understand pain.

About the author

Joanna Bourke is Professor of History at the University of London, a Fellow of the British Academy, a member of the Royal Historical Society, and a PhD student at the Australian National University. Her research interests include the history of modern warfare, the history of military medicine, and the history of emotions. His book is The Scarred World: How Military Violence and War Games Invade Our Lives, Falling in Love with Animals, and more than a dozen other books have been translated into Chinese, Russian, Spanish, Catalan, Italian, Portuguese, Czech, Turkish, and Greek. He has won many important awards and titles, including The Wolfson History Prize and The Fraenkel Prize.

Wang Chen, Ph.D., Department of History, Peking University, currently works at the Museum. My major is environmental history, medical and social history, and I love the history of all kinds of marginal people and marginal things.
