In October 1869, Dostoyevsky arrived in St. Petersburg due to the death of his stepson, Pavel. The grief-stricken writer is determined to uncover the truth about his stepson's life: Did Barwell commit suicide or was he killed? Did he love his stepfather or despise him? On his quest for the truth, Dostoyevsky finds himself caught up in a conspiracy. For him, this experience was not only a painful torture, but also an extraordinary experience, and eventually became the opportunity and nourishment for his creation of "The Demons".

Wang Yongnian was born in 1927 in Dinghai, Zhejiang Province. He graduated from St. John's University with a degree in English literature. He was the foreign literature editor of Shanghai Literature and Art Joint Publishing House and New Literature and Art Publishing House, and the senior editor of Xinhua News Agency's external and Latin America bureau. His main translations include the Complete Novels of O. Henry, East of Eden (Steinbeck), Babbitt (Sinclair Lewis), On the Road (Jack Kerouac), The Experience of Joseph Andrews (Henry Fielding), Spain in My Heart (Neruda), The General in the Labyrinth (Garcia Marquez), The Decameron (1839-1859). (Boccaccio), "The Married Couple" (Manzoni), "The Mysterious Flame of Queen Loana" (Umberto Eco), "The Complete Works of Borges" (translated), etc.
Kuang Yongmei is editor of the Institute of Foreign Literature of the Chinese Academy of Social Sciences and deputy editor of World Literature. He has long been engaged in translation and research work in English literature, including My Father and Mother (Doris Lessing), Migration in the End (Mohin Hamid) and Ecstasy (Jennifer Clement).
