《中国近代史》被誉为中国近代史研究的开山之作。
全书写于1938年，从鸦片战争始，终于抗日战争，将中国近百年的史事浓缩在短短不到十万字里，主题鲜明，史论兼具。书中对鸦片战争、天平天国运动、洋务运动、戊戌变法、辛亥革命等中国近代史上的重大事件均有条分缕析的解读，多有新意；对于林则徐、洪秀全、曾国藩、李鸿章、康有为、孙中山等历史人物也做出了恰如其分的评价。
本次特别收录《琦善与鸦片战争》《李鸿章》等七篇散论，有助我们更加全面读懂波澜壮阔的中国近代百年史。
蒋廷黻，（1895－1965），中国著名历史学家、外交家，湖南邵阳（今邵东）人。1911年赴美求学，获哥伦比亚大学博士学位；1923年回国任南开大学第一任历史系主任，与梁启超成为南开大学史学的奠基者；1929调入清华大学任历史系主任，在任期间改革清华大学历史系，建立起全国一流的史学阵营，代表作《中国近代史》，影响深远。

Modern Chinese History is regarded as the first work in the study of modern Chinese history.
Written in 1938, starting with the Opium War and ending with the War of Resistance against Japanese Aggression, the book condense China's history of the past hundred years into less than 100,000 words, with a distinct theme and both historical theories. In the book, the important events in modern Chinese history such as the Opium War, the Tianping Heavenly Kingdom Movement, the Westernization Movement, the Hundred Days' Reform and the Revolution of 1911 are analyzed in a systematic way, and there are many new ideas. For Lin Zexu, Hong Xiuquan, Zeng Guofan, Li Hongzhang, Kang Youwei, Sun Yat-sen and other historical figures also made appropriate evaluation.

Jiang Tingfu (1895-1965), a famous Chinese historian and diplomat, was born in Shaoyang, Hunan Province (now Shaodong). In 1911, he went to the United States to study and received a doctorate from Columbia University. In 1923, he returned to China and became the first director of the history Department of Nankai University, and became the founder of history of Nankai University with Liang Qichao. In 1929, he was transferred to Tsinghua University as the director of the Department of History. During his tenure, he reformed the Department of History of Tsinghua University and established a first-class historiography camp in China.
