作者简介
任博克（Brook Ziporyn），美国汉学家与哲学家，曾先后任职或授课于美国密歇根大学、哈佛大学、新加坡国立大学等，现任教于芝加哥大学神学院。任博克的主要研究方向为：道家思想、天台宗思想、中西哲学比较等，他发表了百余篇论文及多本汉学著作，在当代美国庄学研究及天台宗思想研究方面成绩斐然。任博克近年主要著作有《善与恶：天台佛教思想中的遍中整体论、交互主体性与价值吊诡》《解缚之半影：郭象的新道家哲学》《一与异之外：前新儒学时期中国思想中的“理”与连贯成形》等。

彭荣，哲学博士，浙江师范大学马克思主义学院讲师，主要研究方向为宋明理学，主持国家社科基金青年项目“吕祖谦道学思想研究”，校点《考亭渊源录》，发表论文若干。

Compared with Western thought, how did early Chinese thinkers understand identity and difference, self and others, interior and exterior, relative and absolute? In his book The Irony of One and Different, Ren Bock, based on the contrast between traditional Chinese thinking and modern Western thinking originating from ancient Greece, reorganizes the classical thinking before the Han Dynasty (Kong, Meng, Lao, Zhuang, Xun, Yi Zhuan, etc.) from the perspective of irony and non-irony, and puts forward a "coherent shape" (theory) of the value world in ancient China. This book focuses on identity, value, ontology, ethics, and other traditional epistemological issues that ancient thinkers have long debated, revealing the unique experience and value of traditional Chinese thought.
About the author
Brook Ziporyn is an American Sinologist and philosopher who has taught at the University of Michigan, Harvard University, and the National University of Singapore, and currently teaches at the University of Chicago Divinity School. Ren Bock's main research directions are: Taoist thought, Tiantai School thought, comparison of Chinese and Western philosophy, etc. He has published more than 100 papers and many works on Chinese studies, and has made great achievements in the study of contemporary American Zhuang and Tiantai School thought. Ren Boke's recent books include Good and Evil: Universal Holism, Interactive Subjectivity, and Value Paradox in Tiantai Buddhist Thought, Penumba Unbound: Guo Xiang's New Taoist Philosophy, and Beyond One and Different: The "Reason" and Coherent Formation in Pre-Neo-Confucian Chinese Thought.
Translator's introduction
Peng Rong, Ph.D., lecturer at the School of Marxism, Zhejiang Normal University. His main research direction is Neo-Confucianism of Song and Ming Dynasty. He presides over the National Social Science Foundation youth project "Research on Lv Zuqian's Taoist Thought".
