马丁·古德曼（Martin Goodman），牛津大学犹太研究退休教授，沃尔森学院成员。古德曼将他的学术生活分给了罗马和犹太世界。他编审过《罗马研究杂志》《犹太研究杂志》，并在罗马和犹太研究领域著作颇丰。

This book focuses on the conflict between Roman and Jewish civilizations in the ancient world. In 70 AD, after four years of war, the Roman legions completely destroyed the city of Jerusalem and the majestic Second Temple. The Jews not only lost their holy city, but were also forced to pay Jewish taxes to Rome. A few decades later, Rome built a fully Romanized colony on the ruins of Jerusalem. Next, a Christian emperor branded the city with Christianity. And Rome, the eternal city itself, has changed dramatically over the centuries - inextricably linked to this conflict. Focusing on the Jewish wars around 70 AD and the Mediterranean world in the 1st century AD, the book contrasts the cities of Rome and Jerusalem. The book also describes the contrast between the Romans and Jews in terms of their cultural identity, philosophical ideas, way of life, governmental structures, politics, and perceptions of each other. Finally, the book addresses the birth of Christianity and the origins of anti-Semitism.

Martin Goodman is emeritus Professor of Jewish Studies at the University of Oxford and a member of Wolfson College. Goodman divided his academic life between Rome and the Jewish world. He has edited the Journal of Roman Studies and the Journal of Jewish Studies, and has written extensively in the field of Roman and Jewish studies.
