　　本书是一部全新角度的300年荷兰共和国史，首度全方位解析荷兰共和国从酝酿到衰落的全过程。

　　全书共分四大部分，分述各时代荷兰地区的发展历程。1477—1588年的共和国奋力摆脱勃艮第的控制，在唤醒自我民族意识与国家意识的过程中掀起一片宗教改革与大起义狂潮。1588—1647年，处于黄金时代早期的共和国不断寻求抗争西班牙统治的道路，在意识形态上陷入大辩论，在权力的对峙中磨合出宗教宽容政策。1647—1702年，航海贸易的大发展，让八十年战争后的共和国在诸多思想的裹挟下陷入内部不倦的斗争，这种斗争既包含内部意识形态的对抗，也包含共和国与外部英、法间的竞争与厮杀。1702—1806年，四次英荷战争的摧折，爱国者党运动的席卷，即使有尼德兰新共和国的垂死挣扎，衰落的时代也必然来临。最终，在拿破仑政权下，共和国正式落下帷幕。

　　乔纳森·伊斯雷尔（Jonathan Israel）英国著名学者、作家、历史学教授，1972年获得牛津大学博士学位，专门研究荷兰历史、启蒙运动和欧洲犹太人历史。他关注文艺复兴到18世纪欧洲和欧洲殖民地历史，聚焦于斯宾诺莎、贝尔、狄德罗和18世纪法国唯物主义者对启蒙运动等思想的影响。他曾荣获：1986年沃尔夫森文学奖（历史类）；2001年美国历史学会里奥·格夏伊奖；2004年荷兰狮子骑士勋章；2008年荷兰皇家艺术与科学院阿尔伯特·海涅肯历史奖；2010年伦敦皇家艺术与制造商学会本杰明·富兰克林奖章；2012年阿姆斯特丹市弗兰斯·班宁·考克勋章；2015年PROSE奖（专业与学术卓越奖）；2017年科梅尼乌斯奖。他曾是英国学院以及荷兰皇家艺术与科学院的成员，于1970年至1972年在纽卡斯尔大学担任博士后研究员（Sir James Knott Research Fellow），1972年至1974年在赫尔大学担任讲师和助理讲师，并于1974年至2000年在伦敦大学学院担任讲师、高级讲师和教授，于1981年至1985年担任伦敦大学高级讲师，1985年至2000年担任该校教授。2016年退休。

This is a new perspective on 300 years of history of the Dutch Republic, the first comprehensive analysis of the Dutch Republic from inception to decline.

The book is divided into four parts, describing the development of the Dutch region in each era. The Republic of 1477-1588 struggled to get rid of Burgundy's control, and set off a wave of religious reforms and great uprisings in the process of awakening its national and national consciousness. From 1588 to 1647, the Republic in the early Golden Age was constantly seeking a way to resist Spanish rule, engaging in great ideological debates and blending religious tolerance in the confrontation of power. From 1647 to 1702, the great development of maritime trade caused the Republic after the Eighty Years' War to fall into internal and tireless struggles under the influence of many ideas, which included internal ideological confrontation, as well as competition and fighting between the Republic and the outside world, Britain and France. From 1702 to 1806, the collapse of the four Anglo-Dutch Wars, the sweep of the Patriot Party movement, even with the death throes of the New Republic of the Netherlands, the age of decline was bound to come. Finally, under Napoleon, the Republic officially came to an end.

About the author

Jonathan Israel is an English scholar, author, and professor of history. He received his doctorate from Oxford University in 1972, specializing in Dutch history, the Enlightenment, and European Jewish history. He focuses on the history of Europe and European colonies from the Renaissance to the 18th century, focusing on the influence of Spinoza, Bell, Diderot, and 18th century French materialists on ideas such as the Enlightenment. He was awarded the 1986 Wolfson Literature Prize in History; 2001 Leo Gershay Award of the American Historical Association; Knight of the Order of the Lion of the Netherlands in 2004; Albert Heinecken Prize for History, Royal Netherlands Academy of Arts and Sciences, 2008; 2010 Benjamin Franklin Medal of the Royal Society of Arts and Manufacturers, London; 2012 Frans Banning Cocker Order of the City of Amsterdam; 2015 PROSE Award (Professional and Academic Excellence Award); Comenius Prize 2017. A former member of the British Academy and the Royal Netherlands Academy of Arts and Sciences, he was a Sir James Knott Research Fellow at Newcastle University from 1970 to 1972 and a lecturer and assistant lecturer at the University of Hull from 1972 to 1974. He was a lecturer, senior lecturer and professor at University College London from 1974 to 2000, a senior lecturer at the University of London from 1981 to 1985, and a Professor there from 1985 to 2000. He retired in 2016.

Zhu Yinglin is a PhD student in the Department of History, Fudan University. His research interests are modern European intellectual history. He has edited and translated foreign editions of social science history books, including The Beginning of a New World: A History of the French Revolution (to be published).
