Content introduction

The book, which focuses on social division and political polarization in the United States, is a collaboration between two young elites in the United States. It is a record of their road trips from 2016 to 2019. It is written in a highly readable dialogue style. The two were classmates at Yale Law School, both Republicans and Democrats. Not content with the divided status quo of American society, they hope to get out of their established political identities, explore the real aspects of American social life and find the possibility of bridging the divide. In this sense, the travel routes chosen by the two men span the Midwest, West, South, central and eastern old industrial areas of the United States and the Mexican border, covering different aspects of American life, involving political polarization, class polarization, racial discrimination, mass incarceration, deindustrialization, sustainable development, immigration and other current hot issues in American society. The two authors not only provide fresh insights into contemporary American social life, especially social issues, but also continue to explore the real sources of strength in American society, which is highly enlightening for understanding the deep dynamics of American society. The dialogue between the two men reveals their respective party positions, which also helps readers to glimpse the specific attitudes and understandings of the two parties on different specific social issues.

When Jordan and Chris turned off their engines for the last time, they answered the most pressing question of our time: How far apart are our perceptions?

Two Yale classmates: the son of a single mother and a former Marine; One is a Democrat, one is a Republican. In a time of conflict and partisanship, they decided to hit the road, on a deeply personal journey across the land of a divided nation, in search of growth, hope, and endogenous strength in their lives.

It was a three-year adventure in which the two friends drove through 44 states, along more than 20,000 miles of road, through the tear-gas streets of a Trump rally in Phoenix, Arizona, across the highway between Tijuana and Juarez, Mexico, into the truck driver Pete's big truck, onto the lobster trawler of a Portland fisherman, Into the jazz clubs of New Orleans and the streets of the black neighborhoods where Tassal was massacred. We'll follow Jordan and Christopher from coast to coast, listening to arguments from the front row and their conversations and reflections with Americans as they witness the present and the future of American life.
