Content introduction
Where do Westerners' misunderstandings, prejudices and stereotypes of China come from?
This book is the continuation of the Comparison of Civilizations, one of the "Civilizations trilogy" by Alan MacFarlane, a professor of anthropology at the University of Cambridge in the United Kingdom, and is a field investigation that has lasted for more than two decades, exploring the characteristics of the Chinese cultural circle and investigating the roots of Western prejudices and anxieties.
As an anthropological observer of Chinese society, the author explores the origins of early Western anxieties and prejudices about China: ignorance and fear, combined with half-veiled political and economic competition. Starting from the letter A to the letter Z, Macfarlane punctures this "bubble" of prejudice and anxiety with his own field research, from Confucianism and Taoism, to the imperial examination system and modern technology, to Chinese humility and human relationships. At the same time, it also provides another perspective for people who have lived in the Chinese cultural circle for a long time to observe themselves.
