魏泓（Susan Whitfield），曾任大英图书馆国际敦煌项目（International Dunhuang Project，简称IDP）负责人，现为东安格利亚大学教授，过去三十年一直致力于研究丝绸之路的历史、艺术、宗教、物质和文化，著有《丝绸之路：十二种唐朝人生》（Life along the Silk Road）、《丝绸之路上的斯坦因》（Aurel Stein on the Silk Road）等作品。

In history, the Silk Road spanned the three continents of Europe, Asia and Africa, traversing deserts, grasslands, mountains, rivers, lakes and seas. Countless materials and cultures were born in the Silk Road, forming a splendid Silk Road civilization. The author selects ten ancient objects and tells their stories, showing not only the craft and shape of matter, themes and patterns, but also the intricate connections between people and things: who created matter? Who carries them across the mountains and rivers? Who regards them as treasures and sacred objects? Who abandoned them, and who dug them out of layers of loess... Materials interact with the people and society behind them, different cultures collide and blend with each other, and the economy, system, technology and ideas continue to develop and evolve in communication, all of which are integrated into a vivid and tangible history of Silk Road civilization.
About the author
Susan Whitfield, former director of the International Dunhuang Project (IDP) at the British Library and now a professor at the University of East Anglia, has spent the past three decades studying the history, art, religion, material and culture of the Silk Road. He is the author of "Life along the Silk Road: Twelve Tang Lives" and "Aurel Stein on the Silk Road."
