Content introduction

The Idiot tells the story of "me" between the ages of eighteen and twenty-two, from 1958 to 1962, as I made my way into adulthood. My search for the female body, my conflicted sexual relationship with the so-called "real," my tension in the moments leading to art and to larger humanity, my constant impulse to rebel: against my beloved father; I was drafted and went on to become a soldier in the Algerian War, rebelled against the military, was arrested, accused, tortured, imprisoned, and then transferred to the disciplinary service.

My rebellion at that time and its aftermath: runaways, starvation, theft, guilt, wanderings, military coups and military prisons, physical manifestations triggered by the rejection of this imposed reality: readers will read some impressive scenes in the book.

Inner tragedies, politics, friendships, friendships, comicalities, all are experienced in the physical impulses of youth, in the collective.

About the author

Pierre Guyota (1940-2020), born in the Loire province of central France, is one of the most important contemporary French writers. When he was young, he was obsessed with literature and established his ambition to write early. In 1961, he published his first novel "On the Horse". The Graves of Half a Million Soldiers, a 1967 novel set during the colonial war, was hailed by Foucault as "one of the most central works of our time." Eden, Eden, Eden, with a foreword by Michel Lyles, Roland Barthes, and Philippe Sollers, was published in 1970, but was banned until 11 years later. Volumes 1 and 2 of Happy Animals of Suffering, published in 2014 and 2016 respectively, have had a wide impact in France and beyond, with their powerful language and captivating boldness of fiction. His paintings have been exhibited in Paris, Berlin, London and Los Angeles. He received the 2010 Bibliotheque Nationale de France Prize and the 2018 Fermina Prize Special Prize for his life's work.
