　　本书是抗战题材的历史小说。小说以武汉为背景展开，记叙1938年武汉沦陷后，潜伏在敌后的军统武汉区和中共武汉特委组织分别在主人公李国盛和王家瑞的领导下团结一心，与日寇展开殊死战斗的英勇事迹。主人公李国盛是抗战前打入军统却不幸与组织失去联系的共产党秘密情报员。

　　故事通过拯救一直被戴笠利用的王牌情报员——日军军官、日籍中共党员冈本矢一的“黄雀行动”开始展开，逐步引向深入，并贯穿全书。主人公李国盛、王家瑞和冈本矢一起初相互提防，后来又相互合作。他们在隐秘战线上与武汉日军情报机关以及日军宪兵队斗智斗勇，收集日军随枣会战、鄂西会战、“一号”作战等情报，又配合游击队营救落难飞行员，袭击日军机场、铁路等军事设施，惩办日寇和汉奸，最后还成功粉碎日军投降后企图挑起中国内战的阴谋。本书字里行间洋溢着对这些抗日英雄的忠诚爱国、忍辱负重、智勇双全、英勇献身等精神的歌颂。

　　作者参阅了大量历史文献资料，对抗战的重大史实以及武汉风土人情描写准确、细致。作品中的主要故事情节是以真实历史事件为线索创作的，并将武汉当时的文化传统及历史遗迹自然地融合在故事情节中。作品注重人物的刻画及主人公心理描述，人物形象栩栩如生。在结构上，作品以“黄雀行动”开始，并由此展开一系列的冲突，故事情节起伏跌宕，悬念丛生。构思缜密严谨。许多故事情节扣人心弦，它不是平面展开叙述，而是引人入胜，往往在后文中揭开前面故事情节的谜底。
