　　赫尔曼·黑塞（Hermann Hesse，1877—1962），德国作家、诗人、评论家，20世纪最伟大的文学家之一。以《德米安：彷徨少年时》《荒原狼》《悉达多》《玻璃球游戏》等作品享誉世界文坛。1923年入瑞士籍。1946年获诺贝尔文学奖。

　　译者简介：谢莹莹教授生于广东汕头，长于台湾，1976年辞去德国教职回国，任教于北京外国语大学德语系，1990年患脊髓恶性肿瘤，手术后卧病多年，但她凭借坚强的毅力重新投入教学和研究工作，培养了一代代优秀学子。谢莹莹多年笔耕不辍，学术成果卓著，译作包括《德米安》《盖特露德》《罗斯哈尔德》《流放的老国王》等。

　　王滨滨，毕业于北京外国语大学德语系，德国哥廷根大学硕士，复旦大学外国语言文学学院教授（退休）。

　　巩婕，毕业于北京外国语大学德语系，高等教育出版社德语编辑。

The translator selected representative letters from Hesse's 70 years of letters from 1892 to 1962, mainly including Hesse's personal growth and development, changes in family and thought, pursuit, struggle and creation process, daily letters with parents, wife, children and sisters, participation in social public activities, etc. His interactions with contemporaries such as Zweig, Romain Rolland, and Thomas Mann, as well as his observations and insights on the individual and the collective, writing, literature, current affairs, war, and society, these letters bear witness to Hesse's life and experiences from youth to old age, and also show the trajectory of historical alternations and cultural changes for more than half a century.

In these letters, Hesse sometimes talks about his views on literary and artistic works, sometimes expresses his opinions on social issues, and sometimes describes natural scenery and life sentiment in prose language, which is smooth and vivid. These letters place Hesse back in his own time, presenting him in a three-dimensional way with the spiritual world of his contemporaries.

About the author

Hermann Hesse (1877-1962) was a German writer, poet, critic, and one of the greatest literary figures of the 20th century. He is renowned for his works such as Deian: A Wandering Teenager, Steppenwolf, Siddhartha and The Glass Ball Game. He became a Swiss citizen in 1923. He was awarded the Nobel Prize for Literature in 1946.

Professor Xie Yingying was born in Shantou, Guangdong Province and grew up in Taiwan province. In 1976, she resigned from her German teaching post and returned to China to teach German in Beijing Foreign Studies University. In 1990, she suffered from malignant tumor of spinal cord and was ill for many years after surgery, but she redevoted herself to teaching and research with strong perseverance and cultivated generations of excellent students. Xie Yingying has been writing for many years and has made outstanding academic achievements. Her translations include Demian, Gertrude, Rothhalder and The Exiled Old King.

Wang Binbin, graduated from the Department of German at Beijing Foreign Studies University, Master from the University of Gottingen, Germany, Professor of Foreign Languages and Literature at Fudan University (retired).

Gong Jie, graduated from the German Department of Beijing Foreign Studies University, is a German editor of Higher Education Press.
